Consultation Liaison Psychiatry

The Fellowship Program

The Consultation Liaison Fellowship Training Program provides a stimulating opportunity for a psychiatrist to acquire expertise in the field of  Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry while also gaining teaching and leadership skills, as well as developing or furthering research interests. The Program is based in a highly active 964 bed-capacity teaching Medical Center deemed to be the largest not-for-profit health care system serving the Central and South Bronx in affiliation with one of New York’s most prestigious medical schools, The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  BronxCare Health System serves an ethnically diverse population with a wide variety of ailments. The fellows will have the prospect of addressing psychiatric morbidity in this patient population, as a manifestation or in association with medical, surgical, neurological, and obstetrical conditions.  In addition, they will gain expertise in addressing the impact of acute and chronic mental illness on medical care and quality of life.

Curriculum

During the 12 months of training, the fellows take part of 5 different clinical rotations in addition to having protected research time with supervision and taking part in a year-long CL Medicine Continuity Clinic experience.  The 5 clinical rotations are:  General Inpatient Consultation-Liaison, Assigned Specialty Inpatient Consultation-Liaison (HIV/AIDS, ICU, Telemetry, CCU, Nephrology, or Obstetrics), Elective Specialty Inpatient C-L (HIV/AIDS, ICU, Telemetry, CCU, Nephrology, or Obstetrics), Palliative Care, and Outpatient Primary Care C-L.

Clinical and Academic Activities

The fellows attend to new consultation requests each day and follow-up patients previously evaluated.  In addition, they take part of a comprehensive didactics program, among other departmental activities.  These activities include: Weekly Case Conference, Psychosomatic Medicine Text Review, Psychosomatic Medicine Journal Club, Ombudsman Rounds (interdisciplinary approach), Lecture Series, Departmental Grand Rounds, and Hospital Day Presentation.  Our trainees are also responsible for teaching General Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine concepts to medical students and psychiatry residents during daily clinical rounds and as part of other regularly scheduled didactic activities.  Furthermore, in their capacity as Psychosomatic Medicine consultants, they are expected to impart knowledge to other members of the primary teams in Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, ICU, Telemetry, CCU, Nephrology, Oncology, HIV/AIDS, Neurology, Surgery, and Obstetrics.  At all times the fellows are under the supervision of two full time Psychosomatic Medicine Psychiatrists and have easy access to other faculty members with expertise in their respective fields.
